Glebe

Ottawa’s Glebe, the area just south of the downtown core, is a beautiful, well-maintained area known for its numerous antique homes. The area is extremely walkable and boasts several small shops geared toward people from all walks of life.

Benefits of Glebe Living

Boutique shops and shopping amenities abound in this trendy neighbourhood known for its excellent public transit and strong community involvement. With homes only minutes away from downtown, property values are above-average for the city and are steadily increasing. Snow removal is done quickly and efficiently throughout the winter months, and the area is well-policed, with low crime rates. Residents are known for their loyalty to the area and the numerous schools have helped make the Glebe a great place to raise a family.

Drawbacks of Glebe Living

The Glebe is one of the most expensive areas in which to purchase real estate, and with this high property value comes high property and municipal tax. While the older homes in the Glebe are highly desirable, they do require more maintenance. There is a possibility of asbestos problems in these homes, and unmaintained electrical work has led to electrical fires in the area. Living close to the city’s core does have its drawbacks; homes closer to Bank Street may be subject to the noise of a busy road, driving may be frustrating because of the high volume of traffic, and the area is known to have minor air pollution because of its proximity to the city’s core.
